No One Becomes a Great Manager by Accident

Most people aren’t trained to be great managers. They’re promoted because they were excellent individual contributors. But leading people is an entirely different job.

The shift from peer to manager, from doing the work to guiding others, can be awkward, overwhelming, and even isolating, especially without support.

Right now, we’re working with a client who understands this. They’ve intentionally invested in their new people managers, not just to check a box, but to equip them with tools and language to lead well.

We’re helping them:

  • Navigate the shift from peer to supervisor

  • Lead across generational and communication differences

  • Give feedback that’s honest and trust-building

  • Stay grounded while holding others accountable

We also created a custom handbook for their managers to use after the training. Real growth takes time, and people need something to return to as they practice.

One of the things I admire most about this client is that they’re not looking for natural-born leaders.

They’re training them, which gives more people an opportunity to thrive, succeed, and earn more money (ahem, equity).

And I believe that’s what more organizations need to do.

Not because managers should be perfect, but because they deserve support. They’re often the bridge between strategy and culture, and they carry a lot.
