Self-Care: Help for the Helpers

It’s very easy for people in the caregiving industry to forget about themselves. Regardless if you are a nurse tending to patients all day or a social worker helping better a child’s life, self-care should be on your list of priorities.

In honor of it being social work month, here are some self-care tips to think about:

What’s on your to-do and to-don’t list?
Are you constantly busy all the time? Decide what can be moved from your to-do list to your to-don’t list. Remember you can’t help others until you help yourself first. If you don’t give yourself the self-care you need, you won’t have anything left to give to anyone else.

Learn to Delegate
Ask for help at home and at work so you don’t have to feel like the world is on your shoulders. You’ll quickly find that you will have some extra moments to do things that make your soul happy. A bubble bath in the evening or curling up to a book you’ve been wanting to read, delegating will help free up some time for you!

Find time for yourself every day
Give yourself 5-10 minute breaks between each of your tasks throughout the day. It’s important that you rebalance your workload and make sure you do one activity each day for you. This could be as simple as a 5 minute stretch to get away from your desk or eating lunch at the park for fresh air.
