Cheryll Rothery

Dr. Cheryll Rothery is a licensed and board-certified clinical psychologist with over 25 years of experience in individual, couple, and family therapy. She also provides individual and group supervision to doctoral psychology trainees. Dr. Rothery’s areas of clinical focus include ethnic identity development, adjustment issues, life transition issues, anxiety and mood disorders, bereavement, LGB issues, relationship issues, and women’s issues.

Dr. Rothery utilizes the Relational Cultural model of psychotherapy, which places a high value on healing through relationships, while considering each client’s cultural context.

Dr. Rothery is a Professor of Psychology and a frequent workshop presenter on topics related to culturally conscious psychotherapy with African American clients and transracial adoptees, clinical interventions for microaggressions and racial trauma, culturally conscious supervision of trainees and clinicians, Relational-Cultural Therapy; and racial, ethnic, and sexual identity formation. She has served on the Executive Boards of the Delaware Valley Association of Black Psychologists (DVABPsi), the Philadelphia Society of Clinical Psychologists (PSCP), the National Council of Schools and Programs of Professional Psychology (NCSPP) and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association (PPA).

Dr. Rothery is the recipient of the Rutgers University Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology Alumnae Award for Distinguished Career Achievement  given to alumni “who have distinguished themselves by contributions they have made in their chosen fields of endeavor, by the leadership they have exhibited, and by the general benefits to the larger society resulting from their activities,” and the Pennsylvania Psychological Association’s Distinguished Service Award “for outstanding service to the Pennsylvania Psychological Association and profession of psychology.” Dr. Rothery received her doctorate from Rutgers University in Piscataway, New Jersey, and Clinical Board Certification from the American Board of Professional Psychology.

A native New Yorker, Dr. Rothery has lived in the Philadelphia area for the past 22 years. Prior to starting her graduate training, she taught and performed in an international dance company. Dr. Rothery enjoys dance, music, and theater productions.
