People avoid conflict at all costs to be perceived as ‘nice’ or a good person. Instead, groupthink becomes rampant because no one wants to be seen as a troublemaker. Projects and services stagnate because no one will challenge the status quo. Feedback is only given during employee reviews instead of in real-time when learning is most likely retained. And gossip, talking about others instead of directly to them, becomes routine because people fear conflict. Yet, tension and friction are inherent in the human experience and are necessary for organizational growth and success.

Kindness + Discomfort = Psychological Safety

Often, people confuse psychological safety with comfort, constantly feeling happy and liking their colleagues – none of which needs to be present for psychological safety to exist. Real psychological safety is about discussing the conflict rather than avoiding it and disagreeing respectfully without concern for punishment or retribution (i.e., loss of future opportunities or employment). 

This session will highlight the critical skills needed to genuinely cultivate psychological safety in the workplace. Audience members will rethink what it means to be ‘nice’ at work and understand why discomfort and kindness are the winning combination for creating psychologically safe workplaces. They will also understand the core emotional intelligence skills needed to apply and practice kindness to develop psychological safety within their organization.
