September is the new January with beginnings and endings

Next Friday is the first day of Fall! As we say goodbye to summer and hello to fall, we know that change is here. Change, regardless if it’s easy or challenging takes adjustment. Whether it’s a change in the workplace, with personal relationships, or managing changing moods as a result of cooler weather and longer nights practicing compassion for yourself and others is particularly useful this time of year.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) a.k.a. “winter blues” is very common and usually starts to set in for people in the coming weeks. Preparation is key to mitigate the impact of SAD. Read more about it and steps to take. . .

A few tips to consider to manage transitions:

  • Be Flexible – what worked for you last year or even last month may need to be adjusted. I love walking in the early morning light but as the sun rises later I’ve had to shift my morning routine. Flexibility allows you to keep doing what helps you to thrive but in a new way.
  • Communicate, Communicate, Communicate – as seasons change our needs may change. It’s important to discuss this with people closest to you. Whether at work or home if you need to make adjustments let people know and discuss how to make it work for everyone involved.
  • Say Farewell while Looking Forward – as we leave one season and enter another consider what was wonderful about the past few months as well as what you are excited about what’s to come.
